Itachi Uchiha, a character in the famous anime series Naruto ,was indeed one of the strongest characters in the whole series. Kishimoto took his good time and developed Itachi's character to be loved by all in the end.
In this post I'll try to cover all the major points and put forward a theory on this matter called the "itachi thesis" . Lets begin then 👇
From the sources we get to know that itachi uchiha was a genius from a young age , the highest scorer in the academy 2nd only to Minato(4th hokage), his intellect was far more superior than any other shinobi of his age , mastered the fire ball technique efficiently at a young age and was recruited by Danzo in the ANBU ROOT division. This gives us a brief view on itachi's achievement's when he was young.
Now as for his strength,
He's one of the best Genjutsu users Konoha has ever produced.
IQ on a far superior level, an excellent tactician.
Greatest asset is Mangekyou sharingan granting him two of the most deadliest visual jutsu.
amaterasu (black flames that devour all in sight) and tsukiyomi (an elite level visual Genjutsu very few can survive).
Itachi had a hidden possession or we can say weapons that gives him a edge over any opponent those are:
The Totsuka blade or sakegari longsword - a blade that cuts through anything and seals away the targets it pierced.
The yata mirror - an unbreakable shield that reflects any attack .
The above mentioned weapons alone put Itachi above all the shinobi's before the war arc .
Itachi vs Pain
We already know that Itachi defeated Nagato the original pain in the war arc which strongly supports my point , when Nagato at his best form was defeated so Yahiko pain( 6 path pain) has no chance of winning . Discussion closed.
Itachi vs Madara
Both of the uchiha clan wielder of Mangekyou sharingan. Madara was considered the strongest uchiha of his time who fought head to head with Hashirama senju (referred to as God of shinobi) .
But point to be noted is :
Itachi's Tsukuyomi is far better than Madara's Genjutsu .
Itachi's susanoo has both a yata mirror and a Totsuka blade .
We never get to see Itachi's perfect susanoo (the peak of his susanoo power is still unknown).
Madara's main weapon was his exceptionally large susanoo but here in front of Itachi's yata mirror and Totsuka blade it stands no chance.
Only edge Madara has is his stamina (but if Itachi finishes first with amaterasu then it's over) .
So roughly calculating Itachi beats Madara to a scale of 4-1 considering factors (Itachi - Non rinnegan Madara).
Madara with sage of 6 path chakra was God level / Itachi's yata mirror & Totsuka blade would end up being a good match up + if the reincarnated Madara would have been sealed then the situation of him obtaining 6 path chakra was zero ( Itachi would have sealed him if he would have been alive).
